Clere-lapree is a small handcrafted cheese business that calls Cape Town “home”. It’s located in Capri Village, and can only be purchased in the local area. Here, quality and creativity combines to produce a product that customers can’t seem to get enough of. One product, “Caramella” cream cheese balls, which are mixed with crushed garlic and marinated in virgin olive oil, has won the dairy championship at South Africa’s Agri Expo two years in a row! Despite her premium quality stamp now, Clere-lapree wasn’t always the queen of cheese. Her humble cheese-making education was delivered over the phone if you can believe it. She began her craft in 2003 making cheese at the Imhoff Farm in Kommetjie. Moving on from there, she developed her own methods through research, talking to local cheese experts and judges, and experimentation in order to bring customers the delicious, renowned cheese she makes today.
All of Clere-lapree’s cheeses are free from preservatives and artificial colours. The milk is sourced from natural grazing jersey, Friesian, and Ayrshire cows at Lou and Brian Docker’s farm in the fertile Noordhoek. She also uses a range of Finest Kind products to provide her with the best starter culture bacteria in order to make her superb cheese. “Finest kind has opened my mind up to experiment making cheese” due to their fair prices, top tier products, and stellar customer service.
If you want to treat yourself to some premium cheeses from Clere-lapree, you can find her selling at Rodgers Fruiteries on Kommetjie road on Wednesdays from 09-17 and Saturdays from 09-15. Every other Friday she sets up shop in Long Beach Mall Market from 09-17. Come taste these local delicacies and you will fall in love with both the passion and products of this cheesemaker.
